Cerebral Hemispheres

Differences between the Left and Right sides of the brain

By means of a prominent groove, called the longitudinal fissure, the brain is dividid into two halves called hemispheres. At the base of this fissure lies a thick bundle of nerve fibers, called the corpus callosum, which provides a communication link between the hemispheres. The left hemisphere controls the right half of the body, and vice-versa, because of a crossing of the nerve fibers in the medulla.

Although the right and left hemispheres seem to be a mirror image of one another, there are important functional distinctions.

The left-brain and the right-brain are known by numerous synonyms. Respectively, these are: male brain and female brain, the major hemisphere and the minor hemisphere, the sequential thinker and the holistic thinker, the inchworm and the grasshopper, the logical brain and the creative brain, the artist and the thinker.

The question is: why are the two sides described by such antonyms? For answer this question I found a image that show why ...

Experimentation has shown that the two different sides, or hemispheres, of the brain are responsible for different manners of thinking.

The following table that I made for you illustrates the differences between left-brain and right-brain thinking:
